Ezekiel 33:30-33
:30 Also, thou son of man,
the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in
the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother,
saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the
LORD.:31 And they come unto thee as
the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy
words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but
their heart goeth after their covetousness.:32
And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant
voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do
them not.:33 And when this cometh to
pass, (lo, it will come,) then shall they know that a prophet hath been among
them.
The word of God is the
basis of the Christian existence. Without the word of God, right or wrong will
be subject to the individual’s judgment, as the post-modernist preach.
Resolution to read the word of God has been the choice of most Christians, but
the reading or hearing of the word of God is not the end in itself. Ezekiel’s audiences
were eager to listen to the word of God spoken by him but are not ready to act.
We today
Most of today’s
Christians are behaving like Ezekiel’s audience. We make such comments like ‘preach on pastor’; ‘today, pastor preached ooh’; ‘today’s word was good’; ‘am blessed by
pastor’s word today’,etc. (although a’ times we cannot even narrate to a
friend what was preached). The word of God is the truth by all standards but we
don’t allow the word to transform our lives. Most of us are living lifestyles at
variance with the word of God.
The word
Matthew 7:24 says: ‘Therefore whosoever heareth
these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which
built his house upon a rock’.
John 8:31-32 says: ‘31Then said Jesus
to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my
disciples indeed;:32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth
shall make you free’.
John 14:21 says: ‘He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth
me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and
will manifest myself to him’.
James 1:23-25 says: ‘For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto
a man beholding his natural face in a glass:24 For he beholdeth
himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he
was.:25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and
continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work,
this man shall be blessed in his deed’.
We
will note from the few verses above that, the word of God is not for
entertainment but for living and obeisance.
2Timothy 3:16-17 says: ‘All scripture is given by inspiration of
God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
instruction in righteousness 17:that the man of God may be perfect,
throughly furnished unto all good works’.
You
How are you treating the
word of God when you hear it? Has it been for your entertainment or living? Are
you reading the word of God quickly to achieve your goal of reading the whole
of the Bible or you read it to do what it says? Don’t just read or listen to
the word of God but live it!
The
Bible gives us all we need to live our lives for God each day but it won’t help
if we don’t obey it when we hear or read it. You can only get value from the
Bible when you just don’t know it but obey it. Amen!
