FINDING JOY IN THE MIDST OF TRIALS

James 1:2-4 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Many Christians think that once they’ve made that decision for Christ, everything will fall into place and life will be full of ‘roses’. Therefore when trials and tough times come upon them or continue, they begin to question, “why?” They wonder how they could possibly endure horrible circumstances and consider it joy. Some Christians brood over their trials so much so that they are lured back into the world or their relationship with God is affected. How can we as Christians find joy in the midst of the numerous trials in our lives?

Word of God
2Tm:3:12 says “Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution” .Peter also tackles this subject of joy through trials in 1Peter 1:6-9: “In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls”.
James and Peter, in their passages are encouraging us on how to view trials. We should ‘Consider it pure joy…’ ‘In this you greatly rejoice…’ Why? Because the trials we go through make us stronger. James passage clearly states that the testing of our faith produces perseverance. And Peter’s passage states that our faith, which is priceless, will be proved genuine and result in praise to God.
But how can we find joy in the midst of all the hardships and painful circumstances?

Finding Joy
First, we need to understand that joy is not the same as happiness. Happiness comes and goes sometimes as waves hitting the shore. Happiness isn’t something you can experience when you’ve lost a loved one, or are facing bankruptcy. Joy, on the other hand can stay with you throughout sad or trial moments, making you smile at the storms. The reason is that Real joy is from God. To the believer, real joy is like a bottomless well of water—always in abundant supply. Even in the darkest days, when sadness, grief, and loss may threaten to overwhelm you, God’s joy is there.
Secondly, we need to understand that God’s joy cannot be taken away. As believers, we are promised the constant presence of the Holy Spirit. We are promised His joy just as our salvation is assured through Jesus one-time sacrifice for all. Jesus words in John 15:11 says, “These things have I spoken unto you, that my joy might remain in you, and that your joy might be full.”  Acts 13:52 says, “And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.” In Acts 16:34, “And when he (the jailer) had brought them into his house, he set meat before them, and rejoiced, believing in God with all his house.”
God’s joy cannot be compared with the temporal happiness the world gives through partying, drugs, alcohol and the pleasurable times.
Thirdly, we need to stop self-pitying, whining and complaining and grab onto God’s joy. Just like salvation is a free and perfect gift from Him, we must reach out and accept that gift of joy. Grab onto it- like a lifeline. Choose joy over bitterness, anger, and sorrow. Make a decision to choose joy every day, no matter what.

Examples
Look at these great examples in Scripture: “How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy and their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality. For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves;” (2 Corinthians 8:2-3). “And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost:” (1 Thessalonians 1:6). “Rejoice evermore” (1 Thessalonians 5:16). “For ye had compassion of me in my bonds, and took joyfully the spoiling of your goods, knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance.” (Hebrews 10:34). And the best illustration of all, “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:2).
All through Scripture we see the persecution of the church, the trials, and hardships that believers have faced. The challenge then is to truly learn how to consider each trial joy.

Joy in the Lord
This topic is a lesson we should be relearning and rehearsing each and every day. May be your dear one is being declared a hopeless situation after going through several medical operations, you have not been able to find a job or job satisfaction for a long time, your financial situation and plans have not been palatable though you tell God every day about them. Take heart and know what James and Peter want you to discover. God’s joy really is there. You can consider each trial joy, you can greatly rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory even when you feel like you are neglected and all hope is lost. You can endure whatever circumstances are making you worry right now. If you have been saved through faith in Jesus Christ—you have all you need.

Grab onto God’s joy. Amen!

KEEP OUT THE OLD LEAVEN

1 Corinthians 5:7: “Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us:”

Corinth was a trade route, where ships or foreigners come in and go and was therefore full of shameless diverse lifestyles like prostitution, fornication, drugs, adultery, worship of money, idolatry, etc. Due to all these negative influences, Corinth was a city ‘least expected to convert’. But Paul took on the Corinthians and by the grace of God established a church there.
The Book of Corinthians therefore contains a lot of advice on a series of church issues because Corinthians were allowing their former lifestyles to rear its head in the church.
1Corinthian 5, is advising the church to shun evil, immorality and worship God in holiness and righteousness and walk in the newness of life. There was the need to put away the old unholy lifestyles that is not to be associated with a Christian and which is tarnishing the whole image of the church to the outside world.

Purge out
Leaven or yeast is a chemical used to make dough rise before being baked. It therefore influences and changes the state of things it comes into contact with. As it is the custom of the Jews previously to the Passover to search their houses in the most diligent manner for the old leaven, and throw it out, sweeping every part clean; so Christians should take out this continuously incestuous person. Purge out therefore the old leaven (yeast) means put away; free yourselves from these ungodliness.
So Paul is telling us (Christians) that, if we have accepted to follow Jesus then our old life (old leaven) of fornication, adultery, idolatry, malice, mischief, covetousness, extortion, fighting, etc -sin (see Gal 5:19) should give way to a new leaven of truthfulness, holiness, righteousness, peace, goodness, etc (see Gal. 5:22-25).

Paul is also saying since the leaven (yeast) affects the whole dough (church), we should discipline ourselves and if a member is still indiscipline after correction, the church should expel such immoral brother, who is still holding onto the old leaven so that he will not affect others and tarnish the church’s image.

That ye may be a new lump” - That you may be like a new mass of flour, or dough, before the leaven (yeast) is put into it. That you may be pure, and free from the corrupting principles of the world.
As Christians, we need to purge out the old leaven (yeast) or unholy lifestyles (1corin. 1:26-27) as the blood shared by Christ is for our cleansing and not make us filthy.(Heb. 10:26)

“For us” - For us who are Christians. He died in our stead; and as the Jews, when celebrating their paschal feast, put away all leaven, so we, as Christians, should put away all evil from our hearts, since that sacrifice has now been made once for all. That we may be a new lump, new men, new creatures in Christ by our walking in newness of life; and by removing that wicked or evil, we would be like the apostles were when Judas was gone from them, all clean through the word of Christ. Amen!

WILL NINEVEH CONDEMN YOU?

Luke 11:32: The men of Nineveh shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

Nineveh, called an exceedingly great city in the book of Jonah, lay on the Eastern bank of Tigris and in ancient Assyria across the River from modern day city of Mosul in Iraq.

It was an important junction for commercial routes crossing the Tigris, thus, occupying a central position on the highway between Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean, thus, uniting East and West. Wealth flowed into it from many sources so that it became a great ancient city. No wonder it became an evil city that need to be condemned.

However, loving as our God is, who does not want to see the sinner perish, sent Jonah to go and preach repentance to the people of Nineveh and they repented! (see the book of Jonah)

Sins of Nineveh
The people of Nineveh, amongst their sins were ruthless, cruel, bloodthirsty and wicked. In fact there was so much ungodliness that God could not bear it any more.
Due to the intense sins of Nineveh, Jonah opted to escape from the task of going to Nineveh to preach God’s message of repentance. But the all knowing God, whose mercies endureth forever caused Jonah to be swallowed by a big fish and vomited at Nineveh shores after spending three days in the belly of the fish.
Why will such a sinful nation condemn today’s generation? What will the people of Nineveh say about you should you stand before them?

Why Nineveh will condemn us
They were quick to repent at the preaching of Jonah. Even though we have one greater than Jonah, we are showing less interest and willingness to accept Jesus and confess Him. We are rather accepting and joining secret societies and cults.
We have heard a lot of sermons but fail to repent. Nineveh was given 40days to repent. How many days have you been given to hear God’s word and repent.
The people of Nineveh repented at the preaching of a simple message by Jonah, we have God’s word revealed through His Son Jesus and His apostles.
Don’t you think the people of Nineveh will condemn us at Judgement?

Why Jesus statement
Jesus saw the generation as evil. All they sought was signs and wonders and not repentance. Aside all the things He taught them and the miracles He performed, they never acknowledged Him but sought after signs and wonders. What is our generation’s character?
Today, homosexuals are being ordained as ministers of the gospel of Jesus Christ. The situation is so disgraceful that churches are divided and meeting on whether they should accept the sins committed by Sodom and Gomorrah.
Selfishness and greed is taking the better half of church administration. Covetousness and extortion is an acceptable means of making money for the church (2Pet. 2:2-4kjv)
Churches are unionising with the world to seek peace the humanist way. (John 14:27).
Today, churches are ruled by man-made constitutions, like the world, instead of the word of God.(2Tim. 3:16-17).
Truth and Christians who stand by it is being persecuted as they did to Jesus.
Aside all the revelations and knowledge of the word of God abounding, the evils are still on-going and even being committed by Christians.
People are chasing after miracles instead of salvation
Preaching of prosperity and false hope from the pulpits instead of stressing on holiness and obedience to God’s word (1Tm:6:5-6)

Think about this
The 19th Century people travelled on horseback/ wagons to undertake dangerous voyages to hear or share God’s word.
The 19th Century people sat under trees, on logs and in unconditioned rooms to hear God’s word in the olden days.
The Luther’s and Wesley’s who availed themselves for God to use and reveal His truth. How they studied God’s word carefully to learn the simplicity of the New Testament Christianity.
The 19th Century people made difficult decisions to leave their families and friends to follow the way of Christ.

If we are shunning the regular fellowship of believers, not taking advantage of bible studies offered in nice, comfortable buildings, won’t those who preceded us, condemn us on the day of judgement?

Conclusion
1. As Jesus said to His disciples on another occasion: For verily I say unto you, that many prophets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. (Mt 13:17)

2. Indeed, we are richly blessed...
   a. We have the message of salvation offered by One greater than Jonah.
   b. We have the wisdom of God taught by One greater than Solomon -- Don't you think that the         Ninevites would have loved to have what we enjoy today?

3. Don't forget the maxim: "For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more." (Luke 12:48)

Unless we wish to be "Condemned By others" on the Day of Judgment, let us utilize the blessings given to us through Christ, and expend whatever effort necessary to learn and heed His wonderful message! Amen.

DELIVERANCE

WHAT IS DELIVERANCE?
·        Deliverance is about using the NAME OF JESUS CHRIST to cast out evil spirits or demonic powers that cause failures, fears, obstacles or dependences in one’s life; or
·        to break the chains of bewitchment and demonic influence, the chains of hereditary sicknesses, curses and of ancestral sins; or
·         to free the Christian from the influence of powers that control him/her and/or prevent him/her from living a sane and victorious Christian life or
·        freeing from or rescuing from, and most importantly, restoring back to.
Deliverance takes place in the spiritual realm, against principalities and powers, and spiritual wickedness in high places. Hence the battle for deliverance is not against flesh and blood. It is therefore important for every Christian to understand that the weapons of this battle are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds. It is therefore important for every believer to know, understand and practice deliverance as an essential part of his/her walk with God.
Why Deliverance
·        God has a hedge of protection around His people. When there is sin, the hedge is broken and a demon has permission to come in. Ecclesiastes 10:8 says- He that diggeth a pit shall fall into it; and whoso breaketh a hedge, a serpent shall bite him”. Sin is the main legal right that a demon has. Both our own sins and the sins of our ancestors are legal rights for the entry of demons. Demons come down the family tree. This is why some bad “character traits” are inherited.
·       There are other legal rights the demons have, such as curses, which can also be inherited, soul ties, objects in our possession that the Lord qualifies as abominations, and physical or emotional trauma.
How to minister Deliverance
·        To minister deliverance, the legal rights of the demons first have to be destroyed or taken away, and the demons then can be cast out. In other words, a demon has a right to stay in the person if the legal right is still intact. As a Christian struggling with any kind of demonic attacks or weaknesses and attacks in your life, you need to surrender completely to our Lord Jesus Christ and allow the Holy Spirit total control over your body and life.
John 8:36 says that “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed”.  Jesus sometimes in delivering just says ‘your sins have been forgiven’ or after says ‘go and sin no more’. John 8:36 says “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed”. John 10:10 says “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly”. When we are bound by the devil we are not living life abundantly, God wants to deliver you and have you experience life more abundantly.
·        Rebuke the spirit in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the Power of the Holy Ghost.
Believers’ confidence for Deliverance

What is the believers’ assurance of Deliverance? Deliverance is spiritual warfare and cannot be won with physical weapons. The ability of the believer to achieve victory in this warfare depends on his total surrender to our Lord Jesus Christ. Luke 4:18 says:  “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised”. The believers’ victory can therefore be assured in Christ because through His total walk on the earth, JESUS carried out and won the devil through delivering the bonded from sickness, evil spirits, etc.

The devil has emotionally weakened the minds of people and placed them in a prison that they feel they will never be released from. They are being held captive and are in need of deliverance. There is an answer for the bound man or woman wandering through this life aimlessly. That is, to repent and be baptized in the name of Jesus and filled with the Holy Ghost. For true Deliverance can be found by looking into the face of God and asking Him to intercede for you through His only son Jesus Christ.
Why Deliverance fail
Being delivered and staying delivered is not something that is impossible, because the Bible says with God all things are possible; however, the key element in deliverance lays within you the individual.

Bible says in matt. 12:43-45: that when an unclean spirit is gone out of a man, it comes again with 7 more spirit and when the place he left is empty he settles in and the state of the man is worse than his former state.
Some of the causes of failures in deliverance are:

a.    Lack of faith- Matt. 17:17, Mark 9:14-17, Matt. 13:58., Matt. 15:28. Luke 9:1, Matt. 17:20.

b.    Lack of Spiritual Discipline (in the minister). Mark 9:29, Luke 5:34, 35. The deliverance minister must be a man of prayer and fasting; not a ritual prayer but a life of personal prayer accompanied by fasting. This is not a requirement that the deliverance minister fast before every deliverance situation; otherwise, those who minister deliverance daily would be on a perpetual fast. A spiritually disciplined person is intended; one who is strong in prayer and has a fasting life-style. These two spiritual disciplines equip a minister and insure the anointing necessary for effective ministry.

c.     Varying Strength of Demons- Mark 9:29. Notice that Jesus made a distinction between spirits. "This kind” indicates that some demons are stronger and more determined than others, and we have found this to be a certainty. Failure can result from the deliverance minister giving up rather than pressing through.
d.    Conditions Not Met- The candidate for deliverance must meet certain criteria:
·        He must forgive all who have trespassed against him, otherwise, he is "turned over to the tormentors" Matt. 18:35, and he cannot be liberated until he has met God's condition to forgive.
·         He must repent of all sin. Repentance is the prelude to deliverance. I recall a deliverance case where a man refused to confess a particular sin.
·        He must destroy all paraphernalia that give demons a legal right. Deliverance can be blocked by ungodly things a person possesses. Eg. ring, amulets, books, oils, chains, etc. As deliverance was taking place through Paul's ministry in Corinth, "Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men" Acts 19:19. One must be willing to renounce and destroy all cult, occult and idolatrous books and paraphernalia in his possession.
·        He must renounce and ask God's forgiveness for all involvement in idolatry, the occult, cults and Eastern Religion (including the martial arts and Yoga exercises which cannot be separated from heathen religious connections.)
·         He must want deliverance. "Whoever calls upon the name of Lord shall be delivered" Joel 2:32. Oddly enough, there are some who prefer bondage to deliverance. Some have escaped into mental illness as an escape from the memories of abuse and other traumas, or who have chosen to escape the responsibilities of life. For example, they may be institutionalized, and there they are housed, fed, clothed and others care for their every need. Should they be delivered they would have to go to work and provide for themselves. To some this is an unacceptable option.
·        Passiveness: In some cases, the person's will power is weak. He has never adequately strengthened his will in making life-changing choices. He needs to be taught and required to take a stand. Lead him to vocalize confessions and prayers of deliverance. Have him declare his appropriation of God's promises and command demons to go. Such activation of the will is in keeping with the Word of God which declares, "Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you" Jas. 4:7
·        Lack of Knowledge Concerning Deliverance- Sceva’s children. Act 19:14.
Faith causes us to believe that a situation is changeable, which cause us to seek a change or transformation, not only in actions, but in our thoughts, which is deliverance from the way things once were because I am thinking differently now I am acting differently. I have been delivered.

Deliverance cannot happen unless you first change the way you are thinking. Don’t let the devil have control of your mind and you will not be in bondage.

“Be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind”.

Conclusion
·       After your deliverance you will posses your possessions. Maintaining your deliverance requires that you as a Christian maintain holiness and righteousness according to the word of God and claim total deliverance and the benefits by faith. Be careful of fornication, adultery, occultism/juju and drugs (incl. alcoholism) because they are some of the easy ways the demons infest or defeat us in warfare.

·        Your possessions include your life, God's will for you, your destiny, your finances, property and whatever that belongs to you. You will be blessed to plant plenty and reap even more plentifully. You will begin to progress and excel and you will possess your time and place to serve the Lord all the rest of your life, in Jesus name. Amen. Be ye watchful and pray after deliverance.

·        1st Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labor is not in vain in the Lord.”

·        ” Isaiah 26:3 “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee”. Trust is a basis of faith, reliance, and hope. Trust is learning how to lean and depend upon Jesus, trust in him and he will provide. That is what Job meant when he said though He slay me yet will I trust Him, If you trust Him He will, not maybe, but he will provide.

·        Staying delivered is trusting in God and keeping your mind on Him.

·        Staying delivered also means keep resisting the devil and he will flee!

           Finally

Never give up; never yield to the temptations of the pride of life. Never yield to the weapons of Satan’s warfare and you will enjoy your Christian life. Amen!

PROSPERITY GOSPEL

“Force God to perform a miracle by sowing thousands of dollars and your last dollar ... Do you have a sick child?  Don't go to Jesus in prayer, plant cash into the church and God will make your child well." These are some of the messages being blurred from the pulpit by the so-called Prosperity Pastors. For the prosperity gospel, God could be seen as “The Vending Machine God”: just put in faith and out pops blessings – money, homes, cars, beautiful spouses, clever kids, good neighbors, big churches, and plush vacations. The prosperity gospel also has been called the "name it and claim it" theology. God wants His people to prosper, so they maintain in their preaching. Those who follow God and give generously to his ministries can have anything, and everything they want.
So what is this Prosperity gospel? Is it biblical for Christians to follow the principles outlined in these messages?
What is it
Prosperity theology (also known as prosperity doctrine, health and wealth or prosperity gospel) is a religious belief centered on the notion that God provides material prosperity for those he favors. It implies both that people who are favored by God will be materially successful, and also that materially successful people are successful because God favored them. The prosperity gospel is often used by its promoters to elicit donations, on the premise that donations will be materially repaid and rewarded through divine intervention. Prosperity gospel, as also defined, is the teaching that "believers have a right to the blessings of health and wealth and that they can obtain these blessings through positive confessions of faith and the 'sowing of seeds' through the faithful payments of tithes and offerings. The prosperity gospel, however, is a phenomenon that cuts across denominational barriers since it can be found in charismatic and Pentecostal as well as mainstream Protestant churches.
Most of the preachers begin with a "sincere desire to spread the faith but the pressure of fundraising slowly moves all of them in the direction of a greed-based theology
Prosperity theology has been the target of criticism. Within the Christian community, prosperity theology has been criticized as being antithetical to traditional biblical teaching. More generally, prosperity theology has been criticized as being exploitative of its followers, and for the financial excesses and lack of financial transparency of its leadership.

 Christian Tradition
Prosperity theology is not the same as Word of Faith theology, though most, if not all, Word of Faith teachers hold to some level of prosperity theology. The Word-Faith Teachers are the group that would seek to convince us that Jesus and His disciples were rich, that to be poor is a sin, to be sick is a sin, and that faith is a creative force that we can use to shape our world just like God supposedly created this world and universe that we live in through His "faith". They proclaim, "You can have what you say”; "The reason you haven't been healed is that you don't have enough faith”; "We can write our own ticket with God if we decide what we want, believe that it's ours, and confess it," "He wants you rich and healthy," "What is the desire of your heart? Name it, claim it by faith, and it is yours! Your heavenly Father has promised it. It's right there in the Bible." Such statements reflect the models which set forth a theology of the spoken word or of thought-actualization, commonly known as "positive confession", which stresses the inherent power of words and thoughts.

Beliefs
Prosperity theology proponents promote a main idea that godliness and prosperity have a causational relationship. That is Godliness causes prosperity, meaning that godliness is both necessary and sufficient for prosperity,

Arguments for
Support for the prosperity gospel is believed to be found by proponents predominantly in the Old Testament. These commonly include:
  • Abraham, who God stated would bless him with as many children as there were stars.
  • King Solomon, who built Solomon's Temple, which was one of the greatest civil infrastructures of the Old Testament times.
  • Deuteronomy 8:18 -  “But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day”. (King James Version).
  • Malachi 3:10 - "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the LORD of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it" (King James Version).
  • 3John 2 - " Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth." (King James Version).
Critics
Most Christians do not deny probabilistic causation between godliness and prosperity. However, critics argue that verses the prosperity gospel proponents use are taken by them out of their textual, cultural, historical and/or literary context thus falsely supporting their claims; but more importantly, they do not consider differences between Old Testament and New Testament theology. Furthermore, critics argue that Jesus himself was not living in what would be considered "prosperity".
Critics further argue the teaching is a teaching of materialism masquerading as theology in spite of no valid biblical support. Proponents defend that prosperity's ultimate purpose is to fund evangelism and Christian charity world-wide. Critics however argue, evidence shows that the accumulation of wealth and material goods is not for the purpose of the Gospel, which has been the hallmark of the prosperity movement.
Biblical criticism includes:
  • Job. The entire book of which seems to have been written as a rebuttal to a variation of this belief.
  • 1Timothy 6:5-11 - "Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content. But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness." (King James Version)
  • Matthew 6:19-21, 24; Luke 16:13 - "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal. But lay up for yourseIf treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also; v24 “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon."
  • Matthew 6:31-33 - Therefore take no thought, saying, what shall we eat? Or, what shall we drink? Or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek :) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
  • Luke 18:22-25 - "... Now when Jesus heard these things, he said unto him, Yet lackest thou one thing: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me. And when he heard this, he was very sorrowful: for he was very rich. And when Jesus saw that he was very sorrowful, he said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God."
  • 1 John 2:15-16 - "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.."
  • 1Timothy 6:3-5 - "If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself."
  • Matthew 19:21 - " Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me."
  • Proverbs 22:16 - “He that oppresseth the poor to increase his riches, and he that giveth to the rich, shall surely come to want."
  • Revelation 3:17 - "Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked."
  • Proverbs 28:22 - "He that hasteth to be rich hath an evil eye, and considereth not that poverty shall come upon him."
  • Acts 8:20 - "But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money."
  • Proverbs 13:7 - "There is he that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches."
  • Habakkuk 3:17-18 - "Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior."
  • Galatians 2:10 - " Only they would that we should remember the poor; the same which I also was forward to do."
Prosperity teaching seems to promote more self-gratification than true spirituality. Furthermore, aspects of its theology seem overly simplistic and formulaic with critics commonly referring to the doctrine as "Name-It-Claim-It”.
The prosperity theology defines quality of life based on quantity of possessions. This deceptive movement teaches that financial lack is based on limited faith and minimal giving. The theme of Christianity is not money. How to get rich and have everything you ever wanted is Satan's message modernized. Money is a mere illusion. God gave his only Son so that life would become more meaningful, namely spiritual. Money does not make life valuable, God does."

Bible views
"Peter warned that false prophets would arise and through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you..." (2Peter 2:1-4).
Covetousness is "excessive cravings".  It is a constant reaching for more, for that which is bigger, more luxurious. It is a trap multitudes of Christians are falling into in these wild times. Peter warned us to beware of covetous ministers who would use the word to exploit believers – greedy preachers who would develop a false doctrine of avarice and greed.
God's word says of these rich, greedy preachers, “Their judgment is near, and their destruction will not sleep" (See 2 Peter 2:3).  They have become blatant and arrogant in their greed.  They now preach that you cannot receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit until you prosper.  That's blasphemy!
Beloved, do not listen to this false gospel. It is satanic. It comes from the heart of men who are light, frivolous and greedy for more.  Isaiah the prophet has their number:  “Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter..." (Isaiah 56:11).
Mark 4:18-19: And these are they which are sown among thorns; such as hear the word, And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.
Luke 12:15- And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Luke 16:13 - No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Eccl. 5:10 - He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.
Acts 8:20 - But Peter said unto him, Thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money.

Some Great Men and Prosperity
Abraham waited and waited for the son promised. Joseph experienced being sold into slavery by his God-elected brothers. Moses' call to ransom captive Israel led to years of hardships and testing. Israel only crossed the Jordan River after 40 years in the wilderness (and Moses never crossed the Jordan). David was the prototype of the Messiah-King but suffered years of waiting, family struggles, and a son who fell away from faithfulness. Jeremiah spent most of his days in tears. Daniel was a devoted Israelite who had anything but a cushy life. And what about Job? His faithfulness seems to have gotten him into the cross-hairs of the Adversary. Even the Disciples of Christ did not boast of material wealth/prosperity but testimonies of Godly hope through righteousness and holiness, irrespective of the persecutions. What about Paul, who preferred more persecutions to glory in the Lord (2Corinthians 12:10)

Conclusion
That, the Bible teaches that God blesses us is unquestioned – from the great blessing of Abraham in Genesis 12 to Deuteronomy 28's famous list of blessings and promises and Jesus' beatitudes to James' famous statement that God's blessing means there is a theme in the Bible that God blesses. Indeed, God is good; God's goodness means he blesses us and will continue to bless us.
If materialism was ever to satisfy anyone, it would have been Solomon, the richest king the world has ever known. He had absolutely everything and had more of it than anyone, and yet he found it was all worthless and futile. It did not produce happiness or the satisfaction our souls long for. He declared, “Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income” (Ecclesiastes 5:10). In the end, Solomon came to the conclusion that we are to “fear God, and keep His commandments. For this is the whole duty of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).

I hope the above discussion will set your hearts and itching ears on things above rather than on things that moth will destroy. Amen

GET THEE BEHIND ME SATAN!

Matt. 16:23 – “But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men”.

Get thee behind me, Satan” seems harsh and not a character for Jesus, especially when addressing Peter, one of His most devout disciples. This was Peter, who a few chapters earlier identified Jesus rightly as the Christ, the son of the living God. But Jesus had just revealed to His disciples for the first time the plan: He was to go to Jerusalem to suffer, die, and be raised to life (Matthew 16:21; Mark 8:31). Contrary to their expectations, Jesus explained that He had not come to establish an earthly kingdom at that time. The disciples were not prepared for this new revelation of the Messiah’s purpose. Though Peter understood His words, he simply could not reconcile his view of the conquering Messiah with the suffering and death Jesus spoke of. So Peter “began to rebuke Him” for having such a fatalistic mindset.

But without knowing it, Peter was innocently speaking for Satan. Peter was not setting his mind on  things of God—His ways, His plans, and His purposes (Colossians 3:2; Isaiah 55:8-9). Instead, his mind was set on the things of man, the world and its earthly values. Peter was inadvertently being used of Satan in thinking he was protecting Jesus. Satan did same to Jesus in the wilderness to divert Him from the cross, (Mark 1:12-13). Innocently, Peter was doing the same thing. He had not yet grasped Jesus’ true Messianic purpose.

The very thing Peter was trying to prevent was the very thing Jesus came to do – "to give his life as a ransom for many" and, through his atoning death, "to bring us to God." (Matthew 20:28; 1 Peter 3:18).

Note this!
Sometimes we need to rebuke the devil sharply when we sense him pestering us. Peter’s stead could be your brother, parents, friend or somebody close to you. Peter’s situation shows us how we can become an unwitting spokesperson for Satan. This is especially true when we lose sight of God’s plan for us. This comes about when our focus is on our careers, our possessions, our security, things of the world rather than upon sacrifice and service, and the proclaiming of God’s message. When Peter’s focus shifted to his own desires and plans, Jesus rebuked him in order to get him back on track.

The Christian warfare
The Christian will be in constant battle with the forces that militate against him throughout life on earth. Some Christians are ignorant of the existence and source of this battle because it sounds peaceful around (no persecution like formally) - 1Thess. 5:3. To live the just Christian life is a battle withour arch enemy, Satan and to walk in victory as Christians  means we have to know his schemes and how to deal with him..

How did the Christian warfare start?
The Christian warfare began when Satan fell to earth from heaven. He vowed to revenge on God’s children (believers or Christians). See Revelation 12:1-12 (note v.12).

Satan has been on the attack since he was cast down unto earth. He was there in the garden of Eden- to deceive Adam &Eve; He was there at Jesus’s birth through Herod- to kill baby Jesus; He was there after Jesus 40day fasting- to deceive Jesus; He worked through the Chief Priests & Scribes- to instigate Jesus death at Calvary and to barricade the tombin order to prevent the resurrection; Satan has been there to cause commotion and hindrance to the preaching of the word of God in the Apostles time through intimidation, killings, imprisonments and riots. He is still here today causing havoc and deceiving believers until Jesus Christ comes to chain him anytime soon.

Strategies of Satan- They are cunningly many
In the Christian warfare, Satan is our main enemy using various areas of attack on Christians. For example, he attacks through lusts, faith, diseases, loss of properties and various hindrances so that we won’t be able to do what God wants’ us to do.  He did it to Judas- through lust for money; Job- through loss of properties, death of children and wife’s advice to curse God; Paul- through trials and tribulations; David- through lust after somebody’s wife and murder; Solomon- through womanizing; lust for money, failures, drunkenness, family members, fornication, adultery, tolerance of sin, etc. In these last days, one of his greatest tools against Christians is deception, temptation and accusations.  He cunningly works through different mediums and persons to destroy us.

Remember, all he does is to steal, kill and destroy!

Our Christian strategy in warfare
How can we overcome Satan in this warfare? You have to be sure you are a Christian and filled with the Holy Spirit; Not just a church-goer. Know the strategy of our enemy (Satan) as mentioned above and be conscious of his presence in any situation of stealing, killing and destroying you in life.  Again, Know and use your Christian weapon (Ephesians 6:10-18), which is the perfect armour of God, not the imperfect of Goliath, which was easily penetrated by David’s stone or Saul’s armour, which did not fit David for battle with Goliath. The perfect armour of God fits everyone no matter your size or shape and it comprises the following:

a)     Belt of truth, holiness: Belt holds all garments together and prevents them from falling apart. Truthfulness makes you credible, worthy and can stand accusation as our Lord Jesus Christ did before Pilate.
b)     Breast plate of righteousness: It covers our hearts and not our backs. You shall stand firm in righteousness with a pure heart and to move confidently forward.
c)     Feet in gospel of peace: When the foot is grounded in battle, it prevents the soldier from falling. If you are grounded in the word of God, no deception can win you. Study and know the gospel, walk in it daily and spread it.
d)     Shield of faith: The shield is the first defense in attack and it is your faith in battle. If you hold on firmly to the faith in Jesus Christ, you will ward off the fiery darts of the devil.
e)     Helmet of salvation: the helmet prevents entry into our minds, things of this world. Confess Jesus always and let Him be your only hope.
f)      Sword of the Spirit: the sword is for attacking and cutting the enemy in battle. Our sword (word of God) is sharper than a double-edged sword; it is the same when turned both ways. Hold firmly onto the sword; know how to use it well in battle. Jesus, tempted by Satan, using a twisted word was defeated by Jesus skillfully used the word against Satan.
g)     Prayer: Beware of God’s presence. Call on Him at all times. When the going gets tough, talk (pray) to God about it. He is ready to hear and answer.

Assurance of victory
There is absolutely total victory for us as Christ did on Calvary, so far as we depend on Christ and the weapons. see 1John 4:4, 1 Corin. 10:13; 1 John 5:4

Finally
How should we live then? We must continually depend on Jesus Christ daily through bible study, prayer and fasting for consistent victory over Satan. The Christian should learn to resist and rebuke Satan, as Jesus did, when we sense him (satan) around us and he will flee.

May our focus always be on God and His plans, that we may never experience a similar rebuke as Peter but we will rather declare to Satan “Get thee behind me”!  Amen!
