CHRISTIAN WARFARE

CHRISTIAN WARFARE

The Christian is constantly in battle with the forces that mitigate against him. Some Christians are ignorant of the existence and source of this battle. Just knowing how to handle sin and how to be filled and controlled by the Holy Spirit is not sufficient. We have to know who our enemies are, their schemes, how to deal with them and walk in victory as Christians.

What is Warfare
Warfare is about knowing who your enemy is in battle, his schemes and how to deal with them.

How did the Christian warfare start?
The Christian warfare began when Satan fell to earth from heaven. He decided and vowed to revenge on God’s children (believers or Christians). See Revelation 12:1-12.

Strategy of our enemy (Satan)
In the Christian warfare, Satan is our main enemy using various areas of attack on Christians. For example, he attacks through lusts, flesh, faith, diseases, properties and various hindrances so that we won’t be able to do what God wants’ us to do and to denounce God. He did it to Judas through lust for money; Job, through loss of properties, death of loved ones and inflicting diseases; Paul, through trials and tribulations; David, through lust after somebody’s wife; Solomon, through womanizing; unemployment, money, failures, drunkenness, family members, etc. In these last days, one of his greatest tool against Christians is deception.

Remember, all he does is to steal, kill and destroy!

Our Christian strategy in warfare
• Be sure you are a Christian and filled with the Holy Spirit. Not a church-goer.
• Know the strategy of our enemy (Satan) as mentioned above.
• Know and use your Christian weapon (Ephesians 6:10-18), which is the perfect armour of God, not the imperfect of Goliath, which was easily penetrated or Saul’s, which did not fit David for battle. The perfect armour of God fits everyone no matter your size or shape and it comprises the following:

a) Belt of truth, holiness: Belt holds all garments together and prevents them from falling apart. Truthfulness makes you credible, worthy and can stand accusation as our Lord Jesus Christ did before Pilate.
b) Breast plate of righteousness: It covers our hearts and not our backs. You shall stand firm in righteousness with a pure heart and to move confidently forward.
c) Feet in gospel of peace: When the foot is grounded in battle, it prevents the soldier from falling. If you are grounded in the word of God, no deception can win you. Study and know the gospel, walk in it daily and spread it.
d) Shield of faith: The shield is the first defense in attack and it is your faith in battle. If you hold on firmly to the faith in Jesus Christ, you will ward off the fiery darts of the devil.
e) Helmet of salvation: the helmet prevents entry into our minds, things of this world. Confess Jesus always and let Him only be your hope.
f) Sword of the Spirit: the sword is for attacking and cutting the enemy in battle. Our sword (word of God) is sharper than a double-edged sword; it is the same when turned both ways. Hold firmly onto the sword, no how to use it well in battle. Jesus, after he has fasted for 40days was tempted by Satan, using a twisted word. If Jesus had not known the word skillfully He would have been deceived by Satan.
g) Prayer: Beware of God’s presence. Call on Him at all times. When the going gets tough, talk (pray) to God about it. He is ready to hear and answer.

Is there assurance of victory in using our spiritual weapon?
Yes! There is absolutely total victory as Christ did on Calvary. see 1John 4:4, 1 Corin. 10:13; 1 John 5:4

Conclusion
We can continue in victory only if we depend on Jesus Christ daily through bible study, prayer and fasting- our next topics. Amen!

HOW TO BE FILLED AND CONTROLLED BY THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is one of the most important messages all Christians need today. Early Christians filled with the Holy Spirit were changed from fearful men to bold and fruitful witnesses for Christ. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is an experience you need to have.

Act 1:8 says- But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Who is the Holy Spirit?
The Holy Spirit is the workforce of God; the Comforter; the guardian; the Counselor (see John 14:26; 16:7-14)

Where does the Holy Spirit come from?
The Holy Spirit comes from God (Joel 2:28-29)

What are the attributes of the Holy Spirit’s personality?
Can be grieved (Eph. 4:30); Can be quenched (1Thess. 5:19); is one but has many parts (1Corin. 12:11-13); He is Holy and without sin.

What are the works of the Holy Spirit?
• Guides us to the truth (John. 16:13)
• Bears testimony of Jesus Christ (John 15:26-27)
• Gives power (Acts 1:8)
• Gives gifts (1Corin. 12:11)
• He counsels
• He reminds us of the word of God

How many Christians need to be filled with the Holy Spirit?
All Christians (Ephesians 5:18; Romans 8:9B)

Hindrances to been filled by the Holy Spirit?
Mainly Sin which comes in the form of Pride; unbelief; Adultery; fornication; witchcraft; lust; envy; murder; drunkenness; wrath, etc (Gal. 5:19-21)

How to be filled with the Holy Spirit?
• Sincerely desire to be filled with the Holy Spirit
• Give every area of your life to the Holy Spirit
• Confess and forsake all your sins
• Ask God for the Holy Spirit and believe you have been filled

NB: The Holy Spirit baptism is a phenomenon that occurs when a person totally surrenders to God and asks Him in faith. It can occur at conversion or after and is accompanied by gifts (1corin. 12)

Characteristics of a spirit- filled life?
• Power to live victorious Christian life (2Tim. 1:7; Act 20:20-24)
• Power to witness (Act 1:8)
• You glorify God always (John 16:14)
• You bear fruits of Him (Gal. 5:22-23) i.e. love, joy, patience, goodness, temperance, etc.
• You manifest His gifts (1 Corin. 12:7) i.e wisdom, knowledge, healing, miracles, etc
• You are changed into righteousness. Eg from a cheat, a gossip, a timid personality, a quarrelsome person, an angry person to a ‘new man’.

The secret to being filled by the Holy Spirit is to surrender your life, will, possessions and all to Him. Being filled is not a once-for-all experience but a continuous one. This is by faith in the promise of God that He will give to all who ask Him. Since the Holy Spirit empowers and controls us, He equips us for every warfare.

HOW TO DEAL WITH SIN

Having known the relationship that should exist between God and man, we should strive or it should be our desire to maintain this relationship. One of the things that destroys or prevents us from maintaining this relationship is sin. Sin robs us from the joy in Christ Jesus. We will therefore look at what sin is and how to be forgiven to forestall the joyous relationship between God and man.

What is Sin?
• Sin is transgressing the law (i.e. word of God). See 1 John 3:4
• To him that knoweth good and doeth it not, sins. See James 4:17

What provision has God made for sin?
• If we confess our sins, God will forgive us. Forget about the enormity of the sin that it is so big you can’t be forgiven. He is God and never lies. See 1 John 1:9. Therefore, the basis of forgiveness is that we should confess and forsake it.

Why should the Christian refrain from sin?
• The Lord’s hand is not short to save us, neither His ears far to hear us but our sins have separated us from Him. See Isaiah 59:1&2.
• So that God’s grace may not abound. See Romans 6:1,2
• God’s seed is in us. God never sins, so as His seed is in us, we should refrain from sin. See 1 John 3:9

How can we come out of sin?
• Man’s method (dangerous method) like Judas hanged himself, thinking he will be free from sin. See matt. 27:3-5.
• God’s method (best method). Confess and forsake. see Psalm 51:1-12; Proverb 28:13

Finally, Christians have been called to a life of Holiness. Therefore we should get rid of sin the right way to enjoy the joyous fellowship with God. Sin is treacherous and must be dealt with in the power of the Holy Spirit- our next topic.
